Athens jobs picture brightens in November - WGAU

The state Labor Department says the Athens unemployment rate fell from 2.8 percent in October to 2.4 percent in November. Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says Athene ended the month with 101,900 workers, a new all-time high for the four-county region that includes Clarke, Oconee, Oglethorpe, and Madison counties.

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Athens set an all-time record for jobs in November. 

According to preliminary data, Athens also saw its number of employed residents climb for the four-county metropolitan statistical area (MSA). The unemployment rate dropped as well. 

“This November we had great job numbers across the board,” Butler said. “The state had an all-time low unemployment rate and many of our local communities set records too. We hit records across all the major indicators. Overall, it was quite a spectacular month when it comes to the jobs report.”

 

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell in November to 3.5 percent, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points. The nation also grew its labor force by 40,000, increased employment by 83,000 and added more 266,000 jobs. 

Georgia’s unemployment rate, meanwhile, fell in November by 0.1 percentage points to 3.3 percent. That rate is the lowest since the federal government began keeping records in 1976. 

Rates fell across all of Georgia’s 14 MSAs. Eleven set or tied a record for lowest rate ever.

In Athens, the unemployment rate remained fell 0.4 percentage points in November to reach 2.4 percent. A year ago, the rate was 3.1 percent. 

Athens ended November with 101,900 jobs – a new record high. That number increased by 300 over the month and increased by 400 jobs when compared to the same time a year ago. 

The labor force decreased in November by 357. Athens ended the month with a labor force of 102,378. That number decreased by 1,244 when compared to November of 2018. 

Athens ended November with 99,888 employed residents. That number increased by 41 over the month and fell by 475 when compared to the same time a year ago. 

The number of unemployment claims went up by about 39 percent in November. When compared to last November, claims were up by 28 percent.

The four-county MSA includes Clarke, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe counties.
