STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- “If you don’t know Mike, he’s got a sense of humor -- it can be dry,” said Justine Montalbano while her husband, Mike Montalbano, giggled.
He cut her off, “but instantly, she fell in love.”
Mike and Justine Montalbano run TeamLogic IT Staten Island, a provider of technology services for homes and businesses.
TeamLogic is a company based in San Francisco, Calif., with over 190 offices across the United States, and the Montalbanos opened the Staten Island office, in Dongan Hills, in April 2018. They employ three people.
“I wanted it to be on Staten Island because I wanted it to be close to home," Mike Montalbano recalled.
The couple comes from different educational backgrounds -- Mike in business and Justine in hospitality -- but the two have connected by owning an information technology business together and tackling the obstacles that come with starting a new business.
“As a start-up, nobody knows you -- yet and you have to sell yourself and your business to the community,” Mike Montalbano explained.
And communication has been key.
“I think the fact that we discussed it first, about what each person would be doing, was extremely helpful. You have to respect the roles of each other and be confident that’s going to be the right decision," he added.
Justine takes care of human resources along with the creative side of the business by handling the marketing and advertising for the company. Mike, who refers to himself as a chief executive officer of the company, handles sales, technology and oversees everything.
The Montalbanos were married in 2012, and their son, Michael Jr., who is now 6 years old, was born in 2013.
At the time, they lived in Manhattan, and Mike was working long hours on Wall Street.
“I had always seen myself in a nice house with the backyard and pool where the kids could run around,” he recalled.
So he decided to open his own business, and realized that creating a Staten Island office for TeamLogic IT would allow him to support his family and realize his dream.
And the decision has also enabled the Montalbanos to give back to the Staten Island community.
TeamLogic IT Staten Island supports various local organizations, especially Michael’s Cause, which aims to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, a fatal genetic childhood disease that affects 1 in 3,500 boys.
Imran Ramdular, who has worked for TeamLogic IT Staten Island since the company opened, said he enjoys being a part of the start-up.
“I love it here," he said. “I have an opportunity to do more hands-on work. ....”
