HEADLAND, Ala. (WTVY) -- Alabama Governor Kay Ivey wants to fill half-a-million jobs by 2025. One way her workforce development council is putting those goals into action, a smart work ethics program. Thousands of students across the state will be learning inter-personal skills to land a job.
Elizabeth Lewis tells me she has a career plan.
"I want to be a special education teacher for elementary school," said Lewis.
She shares with me her struggles with dyslexia.
"All the teachers that have helped me in the past I want to help the kids that come up with disabilities and problems," said Lewis.
Lewis is one of dozens of 9th graders who listened to business leaders at the soft skills training curriculum kick-off.
"It’s needed the schools and principals are excited about this program, its life skills that will help students forever,” said Rosalind James, Youth Committee Chair.
Students learn "communication, time management, listening," said Lewis.
And other skills employers need
"The number one thing they need is committed new employees," said James.
The training is twelve courses.
"It's smart work ethics, it’s an interactive program and they listen to a video and get a chance to apply it in class," said Angerine Pope, Career Preparedness Teacher.
Henry County Superintendent Chris Padget believes this program will help graduation rates.
"Businesses will come to us and say this is what we need so this is why we are doing this here, for local businesses,” said Padget.
This training will take place in 6 school systems across the Wiregrass.
