Rockford community groups are helping people find better paying jobs - WREX-TV

ROCKFORD (WREX) —The Keye-Mallquist Neighborhood group, Rock Valley College and multiple trade union groups are working together to help people get jobs in the trade industry.

Anthony Dussing is working to become a pipe fitter. He says he grew up in a trailer park in Des Plaines Illinois. He later moved to Rockford, dropped out of high school and served in the military.

But when he returned, he says it was hard to earn money. But when he began his career, things turned around.

“Greg approached me and said ‘we don’t need need a service guy, we need a welder. And where I come from, you don’t get a shot like that,” said Dussing.

The president of the Keye Mallquist Neighborhood group, Terri Schierer, says getting people to work in the trade field will help those get better jobs and fix the low inventory of trade workers.

“If we can get the people to the people who are providing this education, these training programs, that will help everybody out,” said Schierer.

One of the opportunities being presented to people is the RVC Workforce Equity Initiate Grant.

This $1.5 million grant gives 150 people the chance to start careers in areas like truck driving and welding.

“Those can also lead paths to other trades. Many of those are just starters, you know just getting people started in some sort of a career,” said the RVC Director of Business and Professional Institute Bernie Luecke.

Dussing says the getting into this career path has helped him drastically.

“There is no more struggle. I can still live where I am and try to help others. It can not only set your life up, but your kids lives and their kids lives,” said Dussing.
