Birmingham ‘smart water’ company dips into market in 2020 - AL.com

A Birmingham start-up is aiming to deliver a water purification system next year that will allow users to create flavored, enhanced water in their own homes.

Purilan has raised just under a million dollars and is currently using crowdfunding to market their system, which they hope to deliver to users by the end of 2020.

“We’re targeting a market focused on health and wellness, and people who are environmentally conscious,” Mario Carreras, the company’s chief marketing officer said. “The mission of this company is to provide users with the best possible water without single use plastic bottles.”

Purilan’s headquarters is located in Hardware Park. Co-founded by Tyler Hurd and Sriram Ayer, the company is marketing the Purlian X-Series Lifestyle Water System. It is a countertop appliance which can be attached to plumbing or stand alone.

The system uses micro-purification to remove chlorine, volatile organic compounds, lead, and other chemicals from water. At the top of the appliance are two slots, for function and flavor. Employing a touchscreen, the user can then add flavors to their water using cartridges, such as blueberry, strawberry coconut, peach mango, watermelon and others. They can also add vitamins, minerals and other enhancers, such as caffeine. The system allows users to pick their own concentrations for additives, like melatonin at bedtime. Users also get a reusable water bottle.

The X-Series also creates a user profile, tracking factors such as how much water the user is drinking and how users are employing the system. The company hopes to use that data to create specifically tailored mixtures, based on how consumers are employing the system.

Using Kickstarter as a marketing tool, the company has largely reached it’s $10,000 goal with very little marketing.

Carreras said the company is close to finalizing its prototype and filling out its team.

“There are still very minor tweaks we’re making to the system,” he said. “It’s just a matter of time getting it out there to users. We also need to build up a stockpile for when we start selling, getting our logistics in line."

Calling Birmingham home, Purilan also hopes to tap into Birmingham’s thriving startup culture, Carreras said.

“We know we’re young, but we think this product has a lot of potential,” he said. “We’re not trying to make people feel bad for using plastic. We’re trying to be part of the solution.”
