Capital Region employers say it's still tough to fill jobs - Times Union

COLONIE — Employers expect the local job market to continue growing next year, according to a new analysis from Alaant Workforce Solutions in Colonie.

Ninety percent said a possible recession wouldn't affect hiring, while 95 percent said neither trade and tariff issues nor  the upcoming presidential election  would reduce their expectations of job growth. The 92 hiring and human resource managers were surveyed during November.

But finding candidates to fill available jobs won't be easy. The 92 percent who said it was a challenge over the past six months, and the 84 percent who see it as a challenge in 2020's first half, were the highest numbers since the survey first began in 2015.

"It's clear that the Capital Region's economy remains strong heading into 2020, with employers confident about job growth and planning to hire in the new year," said Miriam Dushane, managing partner of Alaant Workforce Solutions.  "To succeed in the most challenging recruiting environment in in recent memory, employers must be both proactive and creative to attract, engage and retain top employees."

The biggest challenge? Finding candidates with the right skills. Forty percent cited that, followed by 38 percent who cited salary/wage demands. Incomes have risen in the Capital Region, and per capita are the highest among upstate's cities, the Times Union reported last week.

Unemployment, meanwhile, edged up to 3.4 percent in October from 3.2 percent a year earlier, while the number of jobs fell to 479,800 from 480,300 a year earlier.

Meanwhile, 55 percent of the responding employers said it takes two months or longer to fill a position. Just 8 percent were able to fill as job in two weeks. And most hires are local. more than 80 percent of respondents said they were most successful recruiting within the Capital Region.

Alaant's next hiring survey will be released in the spring.
