Dead & Company continued their New Year’s run on Monday night, moving from the Los Angeles area to San Francisco’s Chase Center. The band saved an unveiling of a Bob Dylan cover to close out the evening.
Dead & Co. got right to it with a groovy “Shakedown Street.” Guitarist Bob Weir led the way on vocals backed up by guitarist John Mayer and keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. After a bit of jamming, the band headed into the honky tonk-tinged “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo,” which saw Bobby handling lead vocals once again. Mayer and Weir teamed back up for “Cumberland Blues” before Mayer took over on the early Dead staple, Elmore James’ “It Huts Me Too” — originally sung by late keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan. Bassist Oteil Burbridge would join Bobby on “High Time” followed by another early classic in “Cold Rain And Snow” with Mayer on the mic. Bobby and John would sing together once again on “Bird Song” to close out the first frame.
Dead & Company kicked off the second set in similar fashion to the first with another mellow, funky number, “The Music Never Stopped.” The band would continue on a vintage rampage with “Deal,” “St. Stephen,” “The Eleven” and “Turn On Your Love Light.” Percussionists Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann then took over on “Drums” before heading into “Space.” The continuous block kept going with “The Wheel” followed by Bobby leading the band on the poignant “Stella Blue.” The crowd favorite “Casey Jones” closed out the second set.
But Dead & Co. saved the debut for last, offering up a solid rendition of Bob Dylan’s “Quinn the Eskimo (The Mighty Quinn)” — a song the Grateful Dead began covering in the mid-1980s and one that would remain a staple closer for the band until 1995 — to cap off the evening.
