Nominate your company or employer for the Register's annual Top Workplaces award - DesMoinesRegister.com

In an economy with a rock-bottom 2.5% unemployment rate — the latest figure for Iowa — it takes more than just good pay and benefits to attract top-quality personnel.

Prospective employees in a position to pick and choose want to know that the organizations they're considering appreciate their workers, share their values, have strong leadership and provide the support they need to grow and improve.

They want more than assurances. They want proof.

For the past nine years, the Des Moines Register's annual Iowa's Top Workplaces program has provided a tangible way for stand-out employers to show how they stack up in an extremely competitive marketplace.

Nominees chosen for awards get a boost in their marketability. Beyond that, organizations that participate get a chance to hear what their workers have to say about the employer-employee relationship — information that can help them preserve and improve their standing.

Beginning today, we're launching the 10th year of the program as we seek nominations for the 2020 edition of Iowa's Top Workplaces.

Any Iowa organization — business, nonprofit or government — with 35 or more employees is eligible to participate. We recognized 135 workplaces last year.

Our research partner, Energage, surveys employees at participating workplaces and then ranks the employers based on the results of those 24-question surveys.

Awards are given in small-, medium- and large-workplace categories. More than 1,300  employers were invited to take part in the 2019 survey, and 185 were surveyed. Nearly 41,000 employees responded to the questionnaires.

It's free, although employers can gain invaluable information and further demonstrate their commitment to employee feedback by contracting with Energage for more detailed evaluations.

Kate Juelfs, director of services for repeat Iowa's Top Workplaces award recipient Foster Group, said the West Des Moines-based wealth management company has come to rely on the surveys.

"The comments are really helpful for us," she said. "We look at it as one of our primary ways to measure employee engagement."

Recognition of Foster Group as an employer that attracts and retains top talent also is an important message for clients, Juelfs said, because people want assurance that the relationship they build with a trusted financial adviser will endure.

"Nobody wants to work with an adviser who isn't thinking about the future," she said.

Energage conducts Top Workplaces surveys with more than 40 major metropolitan newspapers. Since 2006, it has surveyed more than 14 million employees at more than 40,000 organizations.

Anyone — an employer, employee or even a customer — may submit a nomination. It's easy to participate. Simply go to DesMoinesRegister.com/Nominate to get started, or call (515) 598-7192.

So, spread the word, and nominate your top workplace.
