Therese Tucker had wanted to start her own software company for years. She had plenty of experience and knew she could run a business.
Ms. Tucker learned firsthand the financial risks of entrepreneurship. In 2001, she self-funded her own accounting software company, BlackLine, with stock options from her prior employer, SunGard.
The pressure of not only being a woman in tech but also a founder over 40 facing a cash flow shortage was intense. At one point, to pay the bills, Ms. Tucker emptied her 401(k), maxed out her credit cards and took out a second mortgage on her home.
“I would only do payroll one time a month because then I would only have to miss three days of sleep prior,” she says in this Secrets of Wealthy Women podcast with Veronica Dagher.
Ms. Tucker persisted. BlackLine, which went public in 2016, is a global business and has customers including eBay Inc., The Coca-Cola Co. and Hyatt Hotels Corp.
Now a millionaire, Ms. Tucker is able to give generously to family, friends and charity.
