DNA testing company 23andMe said Thursday it is laying off 100 employees in response to what has been a slowdown in demand for at-home genetic information testing services.
A 23andMe spokesman confirmed that the Sunnyvale-based company is cutting 100 jobs across the consumer-based side of its business. 23andMe is best known for its at-home testing kits that people use for researching their genetic backgrounds, building familiy trees and determining genetic predispostions to health issues.
The job cuts amount to approximately 14% of 23andMe’s total workforce.
Anne Wojcicki, 23andMe’s chief executive, said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday that she was “surprised” about the downturn in demand for genetic-testing kits and called the current market situation “slow and painful for us.”Founded in 2006, privately held 23andMe has received financial backing fomr the likes of Google parent Alphabet, Sequoia Capital and GlaxoSmithKline. 23andMe is also one of the biggest companies in its market space, with an estimated 10 million people having used one of its at-home DNA kits.
