Vic’s Crane & Heavy Haul, which provides crane and heavy transportation services, announced it’s setting up shop at 1105 Elm Ave., in Superior.
“We’ve always done work up there,” said Josh Horsch, vice president of Vic’s. “We expanded to Hibbing a couple of years ago, and it’s kind of the next logical spot we wanted to get to. It just kind of worked out really well that (we) moved up there, found a building and the timing was right. It was a good year this year, so we had a little capital to move into another location.”
The new location will focus on bringing Vic’s crane, rigging and hauling business to the companies in the Twin Ports area who require these services. It provides easy access to truck routes and will house a mobile fleet of 45-ton to 250-ton cranes and other equipment.
Horsch said the company planned to expand into the area eventually, but with a number of major construction projects planned or underway, he said the timing of the move could prove to be a bonus.
“Husky Refinery, for example, we are bidding it,” Horsch said. “It would be a bonus if that were to happen, but at the same time, we’re in that area doing work anyway. It just makes sense. There’s a lot of good industry up there.”
The company is providing crane services to the help with the construction of Central Flats on the site of the former Central Middle School between Weeks and Grand avenues on Belknap Street. It’s the largest of four apartment complexes developed by P&R Properties LLC, and when complete, will feature about 136 apartments, 12,000-square-feet of retail space and parking. The project is expected to be complete by the end of the year.
Horsch said the company's Hibbing location has seen business from the mines increase and he said he expects the same in the Twin Ports location.
In addition to the mines, Horsch said the company serves most industries, but primarily heavy industrial construction such as refineries, pipelines and power plants.
“But we do general construction, too,” Horsch said. “Any new commercial construction building we’re a part of.”
Jim Briggs said he was born and raised in Superior and serves as the branch manager of the staff of four working in the Twin Ports. Briggs joins the Vic’s team with more than 25 years of experience in providing equipment to the construction and industrial markets in the area. He also has 16 years of managerial experience and eight years working in the crane industry.
Horsch said expects the number of employees to grow as the company gets busier in the area. When they hire, they’ll go through Local 139, the operators’ union here, because Vic’s is “a 100% union company,” he said.
“We found a nice location in Superior,” Horsch said. “It’s a nice building. That’s always part of it … and seems like the city is easy to work with, is understanding of how heavy construction works and is willing to work with us on things.”
